Toofaan Movie Review

After the death of Milkha Singh, I watched ‘Bhag Milkha Bhag’ once again. Many film lovers might have done this. The movies with ‘repeat value’ get such success and after some years they come under ‘cult classic’ category. The strong emotional undercurrent in ‘Bhag Milkha Bhag’ gives it the repeat value. For any sports-based movie, the emotional undercurrent which gives strength and encourages the player hero or heroine is the reason behind its success. The Director of Bhag Milkha Bhag was Rakesh Mehra but writer Prasoon Joshi had taken utmost care of these factors.

But another movie directed by Rakesh Mehra which is recently released on Amazon Prime Video ‘Toofan’ is not that much impressive and effective and writers Anjum Rajabali, Vijay Maurya, and Farhan Akhtar have not taken that much care.

Aziz Ali alias Ajju Bhai living in the Dongari area of Mumbai being a bhai is an orphan. Boxing game and heroine Dr. Ananya Prabhu (Mrinal Thakoor) enter at the same time. With encouragement from Ananya, Ajju leaves being a goon/ bhai and decides to be a boxer.
The Father of Ananya, Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal) is a boxing coach. Aziz Ali starts coaching under him and on the other hand starts loving Ananya and she also loves him equally. However, she doesn’t reveal the fact that Nana Prabhu is her father. Nana Prabhu has no idea about their love affair. He comes to know that on the day when Aziz reaches state level in boxing. During the childhood of Ananya, her mother had died in a bomb blast and so Nana has some prejudices against the Muslim community. So, he doesn’t give consent to the love of this pair and Ananya leaves home. Aziz starts searching home to live Ananya and needs money for that and gets involved in a betting matter under the deal to lose national level final boxing match. It would not be proper to give details after this as it should be experienced by you on screen.

The total journey of the movie from start to finish is very predictable and there is nothing new, innovative as director Prakash Mehra has presented it in a very flat simple way; even nothing is there in editing to make it at least somewhat different.

As told earlier, the relation of love by Aziz with Ananya doesn’t touch the hearts of viewers with any emotional bonding and no one can get involved in the return of Aziz in boxing or his victory, etc. this is the biggest difference in Bhag Milkha and Toofan. Whereas, ‘Mary Kom’ of 2014 based on boxing acted by Priyanka Chopra and directed by Umang Kumar was much better. Unfortunately, Toofan cannot reach that level. Even the music by successful Shankar Ahsan Loy has not become a good point for it.

As far as acting is concerned, Paresh Rawal is the best as expected and as usual. The tremendous physical labor by Farhan to portray Aziz is worth appreciating. After Bhag Milkha, the efforts by all means by Farhan make him an ideal actor and producer. Mrinal Thakoor has also acted well. Supriya Pathak in the role of sister D’Souza is so good to watch.

After ‘Rang De Basanti’ Rakesh Mehra had given bouncer of ‘Delhi -6’ and now after ‘Bhag Milkha’, he has brought Toofan.
