Plot Brief – Gopal Tiwari (Arjun Kapoor) and his friend Paaji (Kumud Mishra) are supposedly in the police department but work for underworld don Khobre (Nasiruddin Shah) for money. Both are suspended for being caught in a case. Now the two hold the feet of ACP Pammi Sandhu (Tabu) to get the suspension revoked from above as she is in favor of the higher ups. Pammi is also corrupt and opportunistic like these two. Pammi demands a huge amount from both of them for that. Don Khobre’s daughter Lovely (Radhika Madan) has a secret love affair going on with Khobre’s servant named Danny (Shardul Bhardwaj). Both want to elope and get married and need a lot of money for that. Pammi’s friend is Harry (Ashish Vidyarthi), who quits his job in the police department and works in a private security service. Harry’s agency handles the security of the cash to be deposited at the bank ATM. One day, all the above characters get the news that crores of rupees are being taken from these vans every night and they all follow this van. Naxali Lakshmi (Konkana Sen Sharma) enters when the story reaches a turning point. Lakshmi and Paaji know each other for 13 years. How is that identity and how Lakshmi who came at the right time casts a crooked eye on everyone’s Lakshmi i.e. the money in the van is the next part of the story.
What’s special?– Director Asman Bhardwaj’s debut as a director is ‘Kuttey’. After learning film making from his father Vishal Bharadwaj, he has made his debut as a director and Asman has also written the story and screenplay of the film. The length of the story is very modest at only 1 hour 50 minutes. It is not known exactly what is going on and for what purpose until the interval. After the interval, the film picks up after one thread separates. Since all the characters in the story are in grey-shades and there is no guarantee of which character will turn around, most of the scenes keep you quite engaged. The narration of the story engages. The works of Arjun Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, Tabu and Konkona Sen Sharma have been done well. The cinematography and background score of the film are also good. Naxali played by Konkona Sen is impressive.
What is the innovation?- There is nothing. Like Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Kaminey’ in 2009, all the characters in this ‘Kuttey’ are gray or negative. The audience is now used to this type of action crime thriller.
Where does it fall short? – The film has an ‘A’ certificate because of the intense profanity and some sex scenes. Family audiences will stay away. Despite being a masala film, there is a lack of Hit Music. Veteran lyricist Gulzar has written meaningful lyrics to suit the plot and characters, but all the songs are played in the background of the scenes. Among the leading actors, none other than Tabu’s performance could make much of an impact.
Watch it OR Not?– Yes.. When it comes to OTT. Keep the little ones away and watch it once. Nothing so great as to be seen in the theatre.
Star rating – 2. 5 star.
