Movie Review : Sardar Ka Grandson
Now a days I frequently remember Randhir Kapoor whenever I see Arjun Kapoor. Both have legacy of family related to films. Randhir, though did not possess very charming personality or skills in acing, was not that much bad. Then also he could not make remarkable career in film industry. Now Arjun Kapoor is sailing in the same boat. Arjun has renowned producer father Boney Kapoor and evergreen actor uncle Anil. Co incidence is that, like Randhir, Arjun was also pretty fat and had taken good efforts for weight loss. Same like Randhir, Arjun is that much good in acting. Though Panipat was unsuccessful, he has proved his acting skills in Gunday, Ki & Ka, 2 States and the initial Ishaqzaade. Then also his future cannot be predicted even after 9 years in industry. Notable here is that, Randhir had to wind up his efforts in industry in 80s.
The occasion for this now, is new movie ‘Sardar Ka Grandson’ released on Netflix. It is confirmed that blame of failure of this film will have to be faced by Arjun, though its reason is bad screenplay and direction.
Amrik Singh (Arjun Kumar) from third generation of a millionaire family of Amritsar, Punjab is shown as living in America with lover Radha (Rakul Preet Singh) doing business of Movers & Packers. Grandmother of Amrik named Sardar Kaur (Neena Gupta) with age above 90 suffering from cancer is counting her days. Relation between Amrik and Sardar is very friendly and close. Stubborn grandma can be convinced only by Amrik.
Considering the situation of Sardar, Gurkirat Singh (Kanwaljit) calls him back home from USA. Sardar is shown as the owner of huge business of champion cycles in Punjab. When Sardar feels that her end time has come, she wishes to see her ancestral home where she used to reside during pre-independence at Lahore, Pakistan. Her condition is so delicate that she even cannot go out of the house and now the problem arises as to how she should be taken to Lahore.
Then Amrik gets an idea to lift the house at Lahore and shift to Amritsar with structural relocation. How he makes this possible, is the story of film. The screenplay of Kaashvi Nair and Anuja Chauhan is directed by Kaashvi Nair and it doesn’t give anything more than what we watch in trailer. The most fatal thing about movie is that there is nothing to create interest, curiosity or entertainment.
Though the concept of shifting a house from one country to another is very innovative, the film fails in screenplay, direction, presentation and there is no logic to many things. Amrik doesn’t face any difficulties or challenges to make this task possible and there it lacks the drama. Director has not worked that much good to portray the closeness, emotional bonding of Amrik with grandma for whom he is doing the Hercules task. Anything doesn’t touch the hearts of viewers by any scene. At least dialogues would have saved the film from getting boring, but work by Amitosh Nagpal also fails there.
The team has missed a good chance to make an innovative family film. Neena Gupta has acted well but her potential is not used. Director should have watched Neena in recent ‘The Last Colour’ to know her strengths. Only her make up is worth to appreciate.
Arjun also has taken his work casually and doesn’t give any impression. Rakul Preet, Aditi RaoHydari, John Abrahm (who is the producer here), Kanwaljit, Soni Rajdan, Kumud Mishra all have only appearances in the film not roles to remember with good acting. The film is supposed to be an emotional drama but it lacks with good suitable music also.
As I said initially, the blame of failure of this film has to be faced by Arjun probably with mims in social media as trending pattern. He will have to carry this failure as Randhir Kapoor did for many movies.
