Pathaan Movie Review

Plot Brief – Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan) is a member of a group of soldiers who retired prematurely from the Indian Army for some reasons, to carry out international intelligence operations against anti-national forces. Jim (John Abraham), is approached by the ISI to take revenge for the Indian government’s decision of abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir and assigns him the responsibility of carrying out terrorist activities in India. Although Jim is known as a contract terrorist, he has previously worked as a spy for Indian secret agency RAW. After his wife’s death in one of the operations and the Indian government denying his responsibility, Jim now wants revenge on India. Of course, the responsibility to stop Jim falls on Pathaan. Helping him in this operation is Rubina Khan (Deepika Padukone), a member of Pakistan’s ISI. While helping, Rubina shockingly returns to Jim at a strategic time. returns? Yes, Rubina returns because Rubina also works for Jim. Why does Rubina do this? Is she really helping Jim or is it just drama? And how Pathaan saves India from this operation is the next story.

What’s special?- This is director Siddharth Anand’s third action film after ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘War’. Yash Raj Films has announced their spy-universe with this film revolving stories around Kabir from War (Hrithik Roshan), Tiger from Ek Tha Tiger (Salman Khan) and now Pathaan from Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan) and we will see cameo entries in each other’s films. This also has an entry of Salman Khan in an action scene as a friend who runs to help Pathaan. Although there is no innovation in the story, the screenplay moves at a very fast pace so the film never gets boring. The filming of the action scenes is very effective. Overall the cinematography of the full movie is spectacular and of international standard which is one of the major reasons why the audience is hooked on the movie. Many/most of the scenes in the movie are devoid of logic but still its Masala presentation and bursting of dialogues especially make the mass audience clap and whistle at many places. In terms of acting, both Shahrukh Khan and John Abraham have done well. Deepika Padukone is fine too. Dimple Kapadia played the role of Secret Unit Head with ease. Both ‘Besharam Rang’ and ‘Jhoome Jo Pathaan’ are already hit but the film falls short in terms of music.

What is the innovation?- Nothing. There is absolutely nothing innovative about the plot. This film on the lines of previous Dhoom, Ek Tha Tiger, War by Yash Raj Films does not offer any innovation in the plot. Also, there are many (especially in the action scenes) very childish and logic-defying scenes. Only the fast-paced screenplay, its Masala presentation, spectacular cinematography, Shah Rukh Khan’s screen presence will keep you hooked from start to end.

Where does it fall short? – Logic. Of course, this has become a regular thing for Bollywood now. Although one does not go for logic in this kind of masala film, but here the story is about a spy and hence the screenplay is not expected to have such ridiculous loop-holes.

Watch it or Not?- There is no problem to see it once. If you are (still) a die-hard fan of the Shahrukh-Salman, leave logic at home and enter the theaters. Time pass will definitely happen.

Star rating – 3 stars.
