While analyzing the history of Indian cinema for last hundred years, the name of Guru Dutt, who wisely studied the medium of cinema and made immensely talented creations, is seen at a very higher place. His skills to create every frame on artistic values with great quality was indeed beyond the times.
He was the visionary artist walking ahead time. Film appreciators across the world still studying his trio Pyasa, Kagaj Ke Phool and Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam. Pyasa was included among the top ten romantic movies of the world selected by Time magazine.
With only 12 – 14 years of his film career, Guru Dutta had attained the apex point of artistic creations. The importance of his movies is increasing with the passing time. 9th July 1925 is the birthdate of Guru Dutt. He was born in Sarswat Brahmin family of Mangalore and his real name was Vasant Shivshankar Padukon, however, being born on Thursday(Guruwaar) he was called as Guru Dutt all the time.
In childhood Guru came in contact with renowned Ballet dancer Uday Shankar and learnt Ballet. He practiced at Almora and became favourite disciple of Uday Shankar. Guru came to know about many facets of Ballet and he was very impressed by the Shadow Play technique so much that he could use light and shadow technique in black and white movies.
While watching Kagaj Ke Phool we can realize the apex height of artistic value of cinema. Guru established his own Guru Dutt Films and produced Aarpaar in which the songs by O. P. Naiyar earned great popularity. Then came Mr.& Mrs. 55 that featured beautiful Madhubala. With his great trio masterpiece name of Guru Dutta created his place among best directors in the world. Pyasa makes us introvert to feel his agony and grief. It is the creation that shows the beauty of making film with honesty.
After this success, he shouldered the task of making Kagaj Ke Phool and employed all his creative strength. It was released on 2nd October 1959. Progress in techniques of cinema can be seen in it. I was the first cinemascope movie in India.
Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam was released on 22nd June 1962 which was based on a novel by Bimal Mitra. Meena Kumari came in his group for the first time through this film. Her performance portraying Chhoti Bahu became mile stone in her career.
Guru destroyed himself as a result of family issues, tensions, addictions and struggle n film industry with all uncertainties and he left the world on 10th October 1964.
