Movie Review : Haseen Dillruba

A film sometimes gives such an identity to only one actor in it that, though it may not be his first movie and though he may neither have commercial success nor get much appreciation from critics, proves to be a great break to his career. The movie ‘Haseen Dillruba’ released on Netflix features Taapsee Pannu, Harshvardhan Rane, Vikrant Massey mainly. In 2017 Vikrant was nominated for Filmfare of Best Actor Critics for Konkana Sen Sharma directed movie ‘A Death in The Gunj’, but he was not much noticed. Another quality movie with the short role of Vikrant released this year ‘Ramprasad Ki Tehravi’ was neglected due to the Corona pandemic mess But now it seems that the wait for Vikrant is over. ‘Haseen Dillruba’ has its plus and minus points, but viewers and even critics cannot ignore the role by Vikrant. He has played the role of Rishu who is mad in love for his wife beyond limitations. ‘Haseen Dillruba’ would be proved as a great break to Vikrant’s career.

Rani (Taapsee) a middle–class girl in Delhi dreaming for life gets married to Rishab/ Rishu (Vikrant), an innocent engineer living in a small town Jwalapur; this is how the story starts. Rishu falls in love with Rani in the first meeting and after marriage, he supports her though she doesn’t know anything about household work. Rishu’s mother is always unhappy with this. Rani has a habit to tell even the private things between husband-wife to her mother on the telephone and Rishu gets upset by this. This brings differences between both. During this, Neel (Harshvardhan Rane), cousin of Rishu, comes to their home. Rani gets attracted to Neel and they start a physical relation. When Rani tells Neel that she is ready to leave home for him, Neel just runs away from there. When Rani realizes her mistake, she confesses it all to Rishu. This increases the issue and Rishu tells her to go away from his life. Rani keeps on apologizing and stays with Rishu only. At last, Rishu feels that she is repenting and things start to go normal, and again Neel arrives. Rishu asks Rani to leave him alone with Neel as he wants to talk with him. Rani goes out but when she returns, she finds pieces of the body of Rishu because of the cooking gas cylinder blast. Then comes inspector Rawat (Aditya Shrivastav) and starts interrogating Rani suspecting her as the culprit. What gets revealed is shocking but that must be watched in the movie itself.

The story, Screenplay, dialogues all responsibilities are shouldered by Kanika Dhillon who is also the writer for Manmarziyaan, Kedarnath, Judgemental Hai Kya? She is known as a feminist writer. This is the second movie of director Vinil Mathew after ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ in 2014.

The biggest drawback of the film is the character of Rani. It is not digestible that how she gets attracted to another man during a few days gap of physical relation with her husband? When that man runs away, she returns to her husband, confesses the guilt, and within some days he also forgives her. She suddenly becomes so honest and faithful to her husband and all this stuff can’t convince a prudent person.

The twist in the film also carries the same logic. The writer fails to prove logically how the husband-wife who have lost faith in each other, come so close and becomes ready to do anything for each other and goes to such extent.

As the story goes ahead very fast, viewers don’t find much time to think about these faults, it’s the plus point of the movie. Director has tried to make up the things messed by the writer. Cinematography, background score, and other technicalities are good here.

As stated earlier, Vikrant Massey is the winner in acting, and ‘Haseen Dillruba’ would be a real break for him. He has played Rishu beautifully whileTaapsee also gave justice to her role. However, Harshvardhan falls short in his acting.

Aditya Shrivastav as an inspector and Alka Kaushal as the mother of Rishu creating some humor is good at their roles. Except for the song ‘Mila Yu’ nothing is interesting in music by Amit Trivedi here.

If you are ready to keep the logical thinking aside, you can watch it once.
